The ways we access information may be evolving, but books still have a powerful hold on us, as much for their ability to bring people together as for the knowledge they hold. The following projects offer a snapshot of the creative ways that libraries and citizens are adapting to our on-the-go culture and using books to enrich our communities.
My grievances hide the light of the world in me
London Rioting
The wave of violence,looting and fear that spread through London in the last 3 days is appalling and has to be punished. Yet, I also have to say that those teenagers that participated are doing so because they are restless, neglected and lack guidance. For me this means that we the adults and the government have to look in the mirror and accept responsibility for our shortcomings.
Our youth have been disappointed and ignored for many years now! Where are the youth clubs, summer camps or activities that could have engaged most of the youth to enjoy their summer break and do something constructive. A place to channel their overwhelming energy! Well, their energy got the chance to be used for violence and criminality. It could have easily been used for something positive.
Teenagers do not intentionally want to walk down the wrong path. They look up to adults and aspire to do great things. Without opportunity and guidance, that zeal can as easily turn destructive and opportunistic. Thus, those with criminal intent can easily influence our youth to do their dirty work and cowardly allow them to bear the consequences for years to come! - Prison! Why should it be one of our aspiring youth? Teenagers turn the tide and create a wave of good, whether you find good role models or not. I know you will all find a way to walk away from aggression, and channel your anger towards a worthy cause to transform your future by stepping up when most adults are too scared to do so.
It is important to remember that anywhere you experience grievances is equally a chance for a miracle based on valuing your life. Remember that many adults want to help, so reach out and ask for answers to your questions. There is no need to hold on to your grievances and consequently get so resentful that destroying your blessed future by following criminals is the only way to feel good about yourself. Power and fear are temporary highs…Courage, confidence, creativity and maintaining your dignity is for life.
Peace be with you all! I shall always defend a teenagers right to grow, explore and inspire change but to causing emotional and physical harm is unacceptable! Be different!!

Benedictine Abbey Melk, Austria (library detail). The library houses about 1,800 manuscripts from the 9th Century, including a copy of Virgil from the 10th-11th Century. Only in 1997 was a fragment of a copy of the Nibelungenlied from the 13 Century discovered. There are also 750 incunabula. Of a database of about 100,000 volumes. On display were recently e.g. two copies of the printed by Anton Koberger Nuremberg Chronicle. (by rotraud)
